Teaching Philosophy

Kent State Distinguished Teaching AwardMy approach to teaching embraces the inherent complexities of working with diverse learners across multiple modalities and contexts. I employ four core practices: (1) apprenticeship learning that connects students with real-world audiences and authentic projects, (2) communities of practice where we recognize shared expertise and legitimate access to professional work, (3) innovative use of emerging technologies to transform educational practice, and (4) continuous reflection to adapt and improve my instruction. Through these practices—whether teaching doctoral students, conducting professional development with K-12 teachers, or mentoring across programs—I strive to prepare students not just with knowledge and skills, but with the confidence that they were genuinely cared for and supported in their learning journey.
